Many of you have asked how you, or family and friends, can help St. Mary School in our recovery from hurricane Florence.

We are blessed that after 3 weeks out of school, our students were able to return to classes last week. However, our historic campus suffered major damage. Consolidating operations by combining classes into a single building has gone smoothly. It is not an ideal situation, but we are hopeful that this is a very short term situation.

Although insurance will cover the building restoration, teaching tools, and many other expenses, our teachers spent hundreds of dollars out-of-pocket preparing their classrooms for this school year—much of which was destroyed by Hurricane Florence. Your help is needed more than ever.

Many of our teachers and school families affected by the storm can’t afford to help because they’re recovering from damages or the loss of their homes and personal possessions. We understand. However, to those who are able, we ask that you consider a contribution to the fund to be distributed as needed to our classrooms and faculty.

Your gift today will help get the school year back on track, which is vital to bringing a sense of normalcy to our community.

If you would like more specific information regarding our needs,
please contact Development Director,

Update: School Closure
September 15, 2018

Dear St. Mary School Families,

I have just received notice at 2 p.m. that New Hanover County Schools have canceled classes for all students next week, Sept. 17th - 21st, so St. Mary School will also be closed.
I do not know the condition of St. Mary School campus, except to say that many big trees are down in the neighborhood, one in particular on 3rd St. Power has been out for days. I have been able to watch WECT live in Charlotte.
There are no Masses at the Basilica for the weekend.
When I learn any news about our campus, I will pass that along.

Blessings,
Joyce Price
Principal

Dear St. Mary School Families,

ST. MARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL FOLLOWS NEW HANOVER COUNTY SCHOOL DECISIONS ON WEATHER CLOSINGS AND DELAYS!!!
(Parent/Student Handbook, p.14)

This weekend has brought us news of a very dangerous storm heading our way. I hope and pray that it turns back out to sea before doing any damage. It was last year at this time when we came together as a Catholic school family to help a Catholic school along the coast in Texas. They had to close for several months due to hurricane damage. Stay tuned.

Home and School Association (Our version of P.T.A.)
Our new and experienced officers met on Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Watts and me. The purpose of the meeting was to meet, define responsibilities, plan a Friday Fright Night meeting, and share major projects on the table.
I am very pleased to announce the following leaders of your 2018-2019 Home and School Association.
Co-Vice-Presidents – Serena Lau and Derek Macleod
Secretary – Kellie Savard
Treasurer – Emily Allen
Hospitality – Ashley Putney
Gradeparent/Volunteers Chair – Monica Powers
Friday Fright Night Chairs – Lekeshia Jarrett, Lindsay Sanford, and Jeanne Baker

Monica Powers has all of the volunteer sheets that were returned by our families. These were given out on Orientation Evenings. Thanks to all parents who have offered to reach out and help this year. It’s not too late to add your name to the list.

Calling all parent chess players!!!! We are in need of a parent to coordinate our Chess Club. Last year, this group of about 25 students met on Monday afternoons with a coach hired to teach the skills. We would like to have our club compete this year. If you are interested, please contact me.

Harris Teeter Vic Together in Education – 1809…1809…1809
I received a call from corporate headquarters in Charlotte to say that we will be gifted by Harris Teeter since our school has participated for all 20 years of their program. This Friday, one of our local managers will be bearing gifts to St. Mary School! We’ll let you know what we receive next week.
Please register your Vic Card at a register or online to St. Mary School #1809. We usually receive about $700 each year. Let’s top that!

The St. Mary Catholic School

St. Mary Catholic School is dedicated to a total education program in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. Simply stated, our school philosophy is that every facet of life is important: Spiritual, Physical, Educational, and Emotional.

The faculty and staff strive to instill Christian values so that each student becomes a force of good in God’s world. At the same time, the educational program leads and encourages students to develop their intellect to its full potential.

St. Mary Catholic School’s graduates are prepared to enroll in the honors courses offered by area high schools. The school’s emphasis is on preparing students to be independent learners who maintain high academic achievements and standards throughout their high school and college years.

St. Mary Catholic School is  first Catholic school in North Carolina. The school was established in 1869.
