Boy’s Tennis Team: Our boys’ tennis team has been putting out notice to all schools that they are ready for any tennis team when they take to the hard court. Watching them play their matches as individuals, then with a partner, is impressive to watch. Take one hour in the afternoon and come out to Empie Park to watch these skillful young men represent our school. Their schedule is posted on the school main web site under the Athletic Calendar. Keep up the good work, boys!
Volleyball Coach Needed: If you are interested and have some volleyball background, please consider coaching our girls’ team from August through early October. The girls know the fundamentals. You just have to keep them on task and guide them through another fun season. If you or someone you know would like to coach the team, please be in touch with me ASAP so we can discuss the details.
Concession Stand Supervisor: Over the years, since I have been at SMS, our concession stand has been important to our athletic programs. It has allowed us to raise money and keep our programs running when we have not had a fundraiser. We are losing Ms. Paula Smith as our supervisor since her daughter will be graduating. I hope there is someone who would like to take over her position and keep the concession stand running. If you would like to oversee our successful concession stand, please get in touch with me. Paula and I will be happy to help you with the transition as the new supervisor.
Spring Intramurals: Intramurals for basketball and volleyball will be held starting the week of April 17 from 3:15 – 5:15 pm. Mondays will be for girls’ basketball, Tuesdays for boys’ basketball and Thursdays for girls’ volleyball and children from grades 5-8 who would like to attend, I will be sending a signup sheet to each class. Please fill out the information completely. Any questions, feel free to get in touch.
Fall Sports Physicals: Every student who wishes to participate on any school team next year must have a new sports physical. New Hanover County offers free athletic physicals. The date for the boys is Thursday, June 1, at 6:00 pm. The physicals for girls will be held on June 8, at 6:00 pm. The physicals will be given at the Health Department 2029 S 17th St. The waiting area for students is the Health Department’s parking lot facing 17th Street in front of the Health Department Clinic building. Students will be seen on a first come, first served basis this year, instead of by school groups. There is no need to arrive more than 15 minutes early. Before beginning an examination, physicians are required to see the two-page medical history, emergency information, and parental permission forms which are available at the schools and at the Board of Education. These forms must be completed and signed by a parent or guardian before the exam begins. Forms may also be downloaded at www.nhcs.net (Go to Parents > Athletics > Athletic Pre-Participation Form). Rising ninth graders should list the high school that they will attend in the fall.
If there are questions, contact the student’s school, the Medical Society’s Executive Director, Bonnie Brown (910 790-5800/email MedicalSociety@NHPCMS.org), or the NHC Schools Lead Athletic Trainer, Matthew Triche (910 251-6100 x270/email email@example.com). Please note that it is inappropriate to call the Health Department for information or to request copies of exam forms. (Completed forms are housed at the school that the athlete attends.) **One may make a digital copy of his/her own form with a personal device at checkout, however. This is an additional benefit in 2017.
Athletic Boosters End-of-the-Year Banquet: The end-of-the-year recognition banquet will be held on Thursday, May 11, 2017, in the Upper Room. Athletes and coaches are guests of the Athletic Boosters, while siblings and parents of our athletes will be asked to pay a small charge for the dinner. This is a great end-of-the-year event. Please mark the date on your calendar now. More information will be sent to you as an evite. Please respond so we know how many and who will be attending.
Fall Sports: I am hoping to have a girls’ tennis team and volleyball team. Our team players must be in grades 6-8 to participate in league contests, but 5th graders may be members of the team and participate in practices and scrimmages. This will prepare our younger players for the future. Our Cross Country team is open to runners, both boys and girls, in grades 4-8. This sport is still under the experimental title in our league, so it is open for grades other than 6-8. I will be gathering information from interested players at the end of the year. We will need parent email address so coaches can communicate with parents over the summer.
Our Cheerleading team will also begin in the summer. More information will be sent out soon. If we have a parent who would like to help Mrs. Frelke and our team, please notify me. We can all discuss next year’s cheerleading program together.
